NAO Meeting - Jan 16-18 - More Details

97% | 3

(Since the system drive of my server/router decided this weekend was a good time to die, this is 1 or 2 days late.)

Here we go:

NP: Shyne 11 - Meeting Point

My place, this Friday (2004-01-16). Is approx. 19:00 okay for you people?

Route 69 service:
From Augsburg to Buchs via Lindau, Bregenz, Feldkirch
From Lindau to Buchs (zoom-in of the previous map)
From the Austrian/FL border to Buchs
Buchs (or part thereof)
The last 100 meters or so
From Lindau (Bodensee), drive like this:
Cross the German/Austrian border from Lindau to Bregenz. In Bregenz you head towards Feldkirch - I suggest you get a 10-day vignette for around € 8, so you can use the highway.
Once arrived in (or around) Feldkirch, head towards the border ("CH" or "Schweiz" or "FL" or "Liechtenstein"). The border building should be labelled "Zollamt Feldkirch-Tisis". If you get lost, find the train station, from there it's relatively easy.
Having crossed the Swiss border, you will find yourself in Liechtenstein (most likely, or shall I say hopefully, in Schaanwald). Remember not to stay in Liechtenstein too long, so as not to cause emigration due to overpopulation.
Once in Liechtenstein, do not follow the road signs to Switzerland, as they will lead you to the highway. Instead just follow the road you're on. After a short while it will lead you through Nendeln (landmark: a traffic light with a bp gas station on the left). Leave Nendeln, pass a large factory on the left after a while (landmark: big buildings labelled "HILTI" & traffic lights), and enter Schaan. (You're still following the same road since you crossed borders.) At the end of the road there's the Lindenkreuzung (landmark: traffic lights, Rest. Linde on the left) where you turn right. Now follow that road until you pass the Rheinbrücke. (In the middle of the bridge there's a small plate saying "Liechtenstein | Schweiz". That's the border by the way.) Drive straight ahead until after 2 roundabouts you get on another bridge (crossing the railways) and then another roundabout. (Landmark: Agrola gas station and Disco Bronx.
In that roundabout, turn right and follow the road again, you have to turn right once in that process. (Landmark: TV Bren on the left side after the right-turn.) At the end of the road turn left and drive slowly, for you're almost there. (Landmark: Pizzeria Flös on the left side.) After a short while you'll see a huge blue block of flats on the right. Before that, there's another two blocks on the left, with a small car park inbetween them. Park your car in the middle (right in front of the no-parking sign) and walk towards the house with the stone eagle (or whatever it is) in front.
If you get lost or anything goes wrong, Jaz knows how to reach me.
If this sounds too complicated, let me know so I can wait for you at the border or somewhere else.
I'll try and post a few pictures of the landmarks as soon as I get around to making them.

NP: Men at Work - Who Can It Be

People participating: Jaz, MrCrash, wizz, ginsterbusch, Magicdead, Orchid and my humble self.
People having expressed interest and currently waiting for me to contact them: Leandra
People needing to be persuaded: Ettena. Please help us and tell her that her presence is imperative.

Anybody else?

NP: Faces - Lazy Sunday Afternoon

Monday
Get paycheck
Cash paycheck
Buy milk.

Oops, wrong agenda. Sorry. :-) Here's what we could do:

Friday
People arrive in small groups around 19:00.
Approach #1: There's pizza and games, and we can chat. (Spaghetti upon request.)
Approach #2: Chinese restaurant.
Later we can hit a bar, play Postal 2, trade files, or whatever we feel like.

Saturday
Regain consciousness, have a NAO-style breakfast.
Go buy chocolate, cheese, bank accounts and other souvenirs. Go back to HQ to store loot.
Winter sports: Currently it's raining :-( but the weather forecast lady says it'll be snowing on Friday, and I can see snow-covered mountains through my window. So there's a chance we'll be able to have some snow-related fun. Due to the considerable work involved with last year's downhill race (i.e. having to climb up the mountain beforehands), Orchid and me have tested alternative routes. Unfortunately with the large number of participants we may not be able to provide a sleigh for everyone, but we've also got other stuff like a tube from an old car tyre, or those plastic mini-sleighs you put under your butt. I'm sure we'll have something for everybody!
(In case we're bored around 18:00 and you all like Aki Kaurismäki, we could also go watch The Man Without a Past. It's a very nice movie, but I think you really gotta be a Kaurismäki fan to enjoy it.)
At 21:00, the bowling alley awaits us. Thanks to the nice man behind the counter, two almost brand-new alleys are ours for 2 hours. (Money reminder - CHF 7.- per game, plus CHF 2.50 if you don't bring your own bowling shoes.)
(If you don't want to play, please let me know ASAP. "I can't play" is no acceptable excuse, as this applies to pretty much anybody in the group!)
The bowling place isn't too bad, there's also a small bar-like place, two billiard tables and a bunch of other entertainment devices. We could even stay there and have a drink after the bowling, or also hit another bar.
If we're still fit and enterprising after midnight, the TaKino could be ours.

Sunday
Regain consciousness, have a NAO-style breakfast, pack bags.
If there's an appropriate amount of digital images from the meeting, burn them on CD.
Depending on the time and the state/mood the people are in, do something spntaneous.
Say bye and drive home.

NP: Blink 182 - All the Small Things

Money
(Jaz asked me where to change money, so I'll sneak it in here and elaborate a bit in case you'd like to know it as well.)
As you may know, Switzerland hasn't joined the Toy Money Club yet, so we still have our own non-Euro-currency. Good news is, as we're living near the border, most places will accept your Euro money as well. Bad news is, they accept no coins, you get your change in Swiss Francs, and the exchange rate isn't exactly to your advance.
So, where to get these very popular, much sought-after Swiss Francs:
1. Your bank will probably help you.
2. If you own an ec card, you can withdraw money from virtually any Swiss ATM.
3. If you don't need, say, 1,000,000 bucks, I can give you my Swiss Francs in exchange for your Euros at a strict 1:1 course. That way we both profit - you get inexpensive Swiss money to buy chocolate, and I get inexpensive Euros for the next time I'm in Austria.
If you still have Swiss gold left at the end of the meeting and you don't want to take it home, I can also give you Euros for it.
Pro memoria, €1.00 roughly equals CHF 1.60.

Phone / 'net
Your cell phone will work. All Swiss and FL GSM networks are available from my place, although maybe not everywhere we're going. Check with your local telco to see what it'll cost you to use your phone in Switzerland/Liechtenstein. I can provide chargers for most Siemens and Nokia phones.
Internet will be available for every device with an Ethernet or 128bit-WEP-capable WLAN interface. There will be at least one publicly available Windows/Linux machine.

How many times have you been driving through the Lindenkreuzung? ;) The Restaurant is on the right :)

What about Taboo - The NAO game? I don't want to miss that! How do you think?

At 21:00, the bowling alley awaits us. Thanks to the nice man behind the counter, two almost brand-new alleys are ours for 2 hours. (Money reminder - CHF 7.- per game, plus CHF 2.50 if you don't bring your own bowling shoes.)

There's a way for some people (maybe not for everybody, because that would be too much) to get that for free plus one drink! I for myself will sure use this. :) Null knows how to print those special things, so feel free to ask him if you think you can't afford more than one round.

Apart from that, null did a great job, so let's have a La Ola for null: oooooooOOOOOO!!!!! :)

I'm looking forward to this years meeting!!! :) See you soon!

Is approx. 19:00 okay for you people?

I think so. How long are we going to need - approximately - from Lindau to your place (assuming we don't have to do a lot of backtracing ;-)?

People participating: Jaz, MrCrash, wizz, ginsterbusch, Magicdead, Orchid and my humble self.

Sorry if I missed something, but how's accomodation going to work out now? Do I bring my sleeping bag?

And @ginsterbusch: If you want a seat in my car (and can get somewhere where I can reasonably pick you up), it would be best to contact me on ICQ (38297003). If you sent me a mail I didn't get it, I've lost a couple of messages recently for unknown reason.

Sorry if I missed something, but how's accomodation going to work out now? Do I bring my sleeping bag?

I knew I forgot something! :-)

Well, as things look right now, we won't be able to accommodate everybody in my & my neighbor's apartments, which means
- Plan B -
we need the 1 or 2 room(s) at Orchid's place.

We have:

  • My living-room - double-bed couch & soft carpet (holds 2 persons comfortable and up to 2 sleeping bags)

  • A friendly neighbor's living-room - couch & soft carpet (currently checking if we can get mattresses)

  • Backup #1: 1 or 2 room(s) with double-bed(s) at Orchid's place - currently awaiting confirmation

  • Backup #2: Another neighbor's living-room, if really needed.

I will post the definitive accommodation plan as soon as I know everything (should be the case this evening). If you can get your sleeping bag without too much trouble, it may help - if not, I've got two sleeping bags I could lend out for two days.

Oh, and the bad news is, I think Ettena will definitely not join us. From what I hear she's got a lot of important stuff to do.

Sorry, but picking you up in Dachau or Munich is not an option. You'd have to come to Augsburg or possibly Landsberg by train or otherwise. I'm sorry, but it would be a rather considerable detour otherwise.

Furthermore, I reckon we'll need about 3 hours (those routing planers tell me 2.5, but I don't believe them). So I'd say we'd have to leave Augsburg by 16:00. (And I rather go a bit earlier, it's unclear what kind of road conditions we'll get, it might even snow). EDIT: null told me 3 hours are a minimum. So we'd better make it 15:30.

and, is there possibly another seat left?

Hard to say. As noted, I only have a Fiat Punto with not exactly generous space in the trunk. However, I consider it kind of bold to bring additional people if null already has problems hosting everyone, particularly if they aren't even NAOees. But of course, it's not upon me to decide...

Don't kill yourself over arriving exactly at 19:00:00.000000. If you're late just call me or send me an SMS so I know it. If you arrive more than an hour late the pizza won't be fresh anymore (as we know from experience :-P ), but as long as I know it it should be no problem.

By the way, would anybody like to order their favourite pizza, or prefer spaghetti?

Didn't we talk about ordering Pizza on saturday first. I think it's way more practical because of just this arriving thing.
I proposed Chinese food in a cheap restaurant just around the corner in Austria. We can make the reservation for eight o'clock or later. How about that? Now raise your hands for Chinese food on friday! :)

Re: NAO Meeting - Jan 16-18 - More Details

I proposed Chinese food in a cheap restaurant just around the corner in Austria.

To be honest I'm still not too fond of the idea, because a) it's much more formal than sitting around with a piece of pizza in your hand, b) it's much less flexible (esp. in terms of time), and c) after travelling ~3 hours our guests may not be eager to drive another 30 minutes to eat out!
But let the majority decide.

well, I'll first gotta ask my chieftain if it's possible to get away from work at friday somewhat earlier (before 18:00).

else, we have to see to that in another way.

NP: Faun - König von Thule

People participating: Jaz, MrCrash, wizz, ginsterbusch, Magicdead, Orchid and my humble self.
People having expressed interest and currently waiting for me to contact them: Leandra
People needing to be persuaded: Ettena. Please help us and tell her that her presence is imperative.

Anybody else?

is there possibly any other room for, lets say 1-2 friends of mine? they're not particularly NAO folks, but then Martin the friendly neighbour wasnt so, too :)

of course, I first had to persuade them to come, organize meeting, etc. - but I think they surely would be a good addition to the meeting. :D

Phone / 'net
Your cell phone will work. All Swiss and FL GSM networks are available from my place, although maybe not everywhere we're going. Check with your local telco to see what it'll cost you to use your phone in Switzerland/Liechtenstein.

some big news to come: although I'm still the worst cell phone hater on earth, I could finally persuade myself to get a contract and said .. cell phone. hopefully it'll arive at work around wednesday or thursday.

I can provide chargers for most Siemens and Nokia phones.

It'll be a Siemens C55 without cam. now lets have some fun creating new polyphonic ring tones using Cubase mobile :D
I personally would be fucking happy if it's going to be something like the ST:TOS theme (complete with the nice bongo rhythm sound and sixties flair) or maybe even my beloved Arch Enemy - Starbreaker. 8)

Internet will be available for every device with an Ethernet or 128bit-WEP-capable WLAN interface. There will be at least one publicly available Windows/Linux machine.

my notebook will of course come with me, too.
If you got some unused WLAN card laying (yeah, I know its not correct grammer) around somewhere, and still got its driver cdrom, I could use that instead my standard - always failing to run stable - Ethernet 10/100 MBit pc card.

Oh, btw: what about the web cam stuff? I could set up some site where we all could coordinate that - if others would bring webcams with them, or your cams, etc. - maybe http://naomeeting.alltagsgrauen.org or similar?
else, is PHP / Perl installed on your local server? I could offer my password-protected webcam system (cryptocam), anybody who would want to attend the "watch the NAOis doing strange things"-show online could get sended this password, well .. bla.

just think of a flat, where three folks of us live together, having a nice totally over-connected LAN - with my router acting as the middle-ware between my room and the actual connect / router - etc.

anyway, it's just an idea, and maybe I even wouldnt be able to convince them, but I still ask: is there an option to ..?

Hmm. I'm afraid two additional people will probably be too much. Not only for accommodation, but also because we'll most likely need to pack everybody (plus a bunch of sleighs) into my and wizz's car. I'm sorry buddy.

It'll be a Siemens C55 without cam.

Schweet! The phone I've been wanting to buy for a year now, but never did it because I fear it's as cheaply made as my current phone (S45). Expect me to want to play with your phone for at least an hour! ;-)

my notebook will of course come with me, too.

I think there's a WLAN card left. You need a PCMCIA slot and, I think, Win98/NT4 or newer. If all else fails I can still give you a 10m Ethernet cable so you can still move around the entire apartment. :-)

Oh, btw: what about the web cam stuff?

I think we could set up something. At best we have a streaming video server, at worst we have a place for everybody to download the latest digicam pictures (much like last time).

is PHP / Perl installed on your local server?

Well, yes and no. The server died last weekend (minus one system drive), and so far I haven't had the time to re-install everything. We'll definitely have a web server, but whether it speaks PHP I can't tell yet. I hope (and assume) that it will, tho. Whatever services it provides will be available from within the LAN.
On the other hand, my 'net connection is now powered by an Athlon 2400+ with 200 Gigs of HDD space. 1% CPU usage with eMule in full action. Go me! :-D

Re: NAO Meeting - Jan 16-18 - More Details

Well, maybe I'm not coming at all.

this is for several reasones, where simply too much work is one of them:

a) *cough*: I'm getting more ill day by day and might take the weekend to recover a bit (which I couldnt during last weekend - for reasons why read this thread thoroughly)

b) stress factor: thanks to having to work for about 8-9 hours per day I'm normally so totally fucked up at Friday/everyday evening I'm already dozing away whilst driving the 30 minutes back home ... relaxing is the solution for this, and traveling from munich to lindau or so surely wont help me relax a bit.

c) the usual money problem: I'm saving money like hell for getting to rent a bigger flat for before mentioned flat-sharing community ("WG"), so throwing all this money out into the open right now doesnt look like such a good idea

well, these are the main reasons. I'm still deeply thinking about it. but maybe this idea of setting up an inofficial meeting somewhat later during this year, maybe even around bavaria or so looks way more acceptable to me than right now ;)

to make myself still showing up at your party I could just load up my cam and we could have some decent video conference ;)

but I still could offer you folks some decent webspace plus subdomain, including php + co., so you could let the images of what you did the last few hours still be viewed on the web ;)
