The little things

?% | 3

Today a friend called me and asked me to pick her up at the train station. After I picked her up we had ice cream and chatted for an hour. As she's a student, the ice cream was on me.

When I came home I saw an e-mail of another friend telling me that something I've done two weeks ago has made a difference.

Strictly mathematically speaking, both events were net losses in terms of money, work and time. And the beautiful thing is, to me it's still a gain. Knowing that money doesn't equal happiness is one thing, experiencing it is another.

Today I'm content with myself.

Re: The little things

Considering that you've just told me that you're planning to head over in February, would "the ice cream parlour is currently closed" be an acceptable excuse?

There should be still enough ice cream parlours be opened by then, shant they? Or is the Swiss such a poor country the italian ice cream makers leave it during winter for good, too? At least over here in good ole Germany, we got lotsa ones open all over the year ;)

Re: The little things

The local ice cream parlour also sells pizze and stuff, but it's probably safe to assume that the outdoor ice cream stand will be closed during winter. I think that's more because of the low demand of ice cream in winter than because of people suddenly not being able to afford it.

Then all you guys have to do is come over here to our place... we can have a mini rave based on ice-cream. Our favorite place makes ice-cream all year long ;) But.. we're in Italy afterall. Oh and it is so nice to be back to home sweet home after a month in the United States :)

Re: The little things

Haha, yes i'm sure i can fit all of you in! however, unfortunately my travel buddy just had to purchase a new car, so we've rescheduled until sept/oct. i know, i know, i've been saying im coming over for years, but i'm very serious. Hell, i even have a special bank account for the trip which is coming along quite nicely. i'm going on my own if she's not ready! Although i really do hope she does come along as she used to live in the UK and has our accommodation all sorted for that part of trip.

at this stage the trip is roughly 10 days in london, then a 3 week contiki tour (yes including Lichtenstein, Germany and Italy) where i'll be happy to ditch the group to meet you lovely folk, then another 10 or so days at the end to do whatever we please which we'll sort out when we're over there. Null, there's a good chance you'll end up with a Mel size bundle in a corner at some point :P

Re: The little things

so we've rescheduled until sept/oct.

This is so not cool for two reasons:
1. No winter sports (as would have been possible in February/March)
2. Next October = bloody ages!!

On the bright side, Liechtenstein is practically in my backyard, so you'll have no excuse not to get shitf... have a drink with me/us!

I smell the mother of all NAO meetings.

Yeah, but i struggle to walk and talk at the best of times. Us Aussies have a poor enough international reputation without me coming along and lowering it further.

2. Next October = bloody ages!!

:( i know. but depending on when we leave in sept, there's oktoberfest potential in the horizon...

Re: The little things

Yeah, but i struggle to walk and talk at the best of times.

No worries, public transportation will do the hard work, all you have to do is try to stay on the track and be faster than everybody else. Alas, chances of snow in September are slim...

there's oktoberfest potential

Ahah, well, if you absolutely must have a watered-down overpriced beer whilst watching japanese tourists puking further than they're tall, I suppose you could buy a Heineken and visit the specialties section of your preferred japanese porn store. :-)

Hey, don't you start dissing my valuable tourist dollars. when you Europeans come to Australia i drop as much slang into the conversation as possible just so they get the experience.

"where ya goin, mate?"
"ahh yeah, she'll be right"
"hook a lefty at the end, until you're smack up against the water and bob's your uncle..."

Re: The little things

well ... or buy totally overpriced fried chicken, while the GOOD stuff is just on the way from Munich Central Station to Theresienwiese.

Folks, I know how it is - I am working in Munich, just a 2 minutes walk away from the subway station "Theresienwiese". People puking in front of your door, everyone just HAS TO wear bloody lederhosen / dirndl and that totally idiotic hat that does not have ANYTHING in common with traditional bavarian hats (ie. its a fake creation just for the bloody fucking Oktoberfest).

No self-respecting resident is going to be there - just italian, american and japanese tourists believing they're do experience the "baviaran live" right there, and of course folks from all over Germany working there hard to get as much money out of you as possible.

The Oktoberfest ist just a bloody money-making machine - if you want to experience a real "october fe(a)st", go get someplace else - even it's some tiny one-horse town deep-down in Lower Bavaria, you will definitly have a way-better impression and experience than on the "Oktoberfest" in Munich.

Re: The little things

Hey hey wait a minute... you said generalizing Italians... I might and should add "idiot Italians". I would never get there for Oktoberfest not even if I was paid... well.. maybe on a second thought... if I get somebody to pay me at least 30 thousand euros, then I might consider that.

I visited Munich, and it is a wonderful city, with great beer... ahhh when I think about those nice little places where we went with my parents... and that Bavarian beer... hhmm.
Well back to the point, Munich is wonderful, maybe a little too windy (I was cold at the end of spring, and I had to buy a sweatshirt right there because we were caught off guard, whereas in all the other places we were in Germany it was just fine), but definitely praising that city just because of the Oktoberfest... well... it's best if I don't comment :D

Yes, i'm very disappointed considerin i was originally going to see you in Feb. But unfortunately my friend stopped at a red light, as did the car in front of her, and the car next her... but not the car behind her. She now has a shiny Mazda 2 which is quite attractive if i do say so myself!

and now i can save even more $$ and do all kinds of absurd shopping.

Re: The little things

Same thing happened to me... they're going to pay my car and me back for new. I hurt my neck in the process so the insurance is going to refund me of all the expenditures plus an extra which will have to be quantified.. we're thinking it will be 1000-2000 Euros more or less.
So was your friend insured, no? She should be paid back for all the damages.

Re: The little things

No comprehensive insurance for her i'm afraid. She drove an old bomb, so it really wasn't worth insuring her car, she only had third party insurance, which would have been dandy if the accident had been remotely her fault :(

Re: The little things

What?! This is crazy!! I mean, it should be the insurance of the guy who hit her car to reimburse HER for the damages!! This is just so weird... is that how things work in Australia? It's one thing if you are the one who causes the damages... at that point your insurance should pay for what you have done, but if she didn't do anything at all, then the guy who is at fault should pay her back. What you are saying makes totally no sense to me. Is it maybe the fact that you guys drive on the wrong side of the street? :P
